Today for Work It Wednesday, I thought I’d give you all a behind-the-scenes look at my morning routine. It took me a very long time to come up with a good morning routine. When I first graduated college and was interning in Washington, D.C., I had to take the train into the city and then take a bus to my office which meant an ugly 4:30 AM wake up call. Back then the routine was simple: take the dogs out, feed & water them, get coffee, make yourself presentable, throw on something office appropriate, and get to the train on time. Ugh.
Since being in a more permanent position, I’ve become way more in touch with the parts of a morning routine that set me up to have a great day. We are often in such a rush in the mornings that we forget to take time for ourselves. I would argue that scheduling “you time” into your morning routine is a key part of setting yourself up for success at the office. The attitude you go into work with is going to set you up for the rest of the day, so why not make it a good one? Here’s what my typical morning routine looks like:
5:30 AM: Alarm annoyingly goes off. Typically, I’m awake before this happens (I’m a bit of a morning person). If I remembered to prepare the night before, my coffee is already done. (Seriously, y’all drop the Keurig and get yourself a coffee maker with an auto feature).
5:35 AM: I have to wait for coffee because of two dogs who have to pee. Nevermind that I do, as well. I take them out and wait forever for them to do their business. (Seriously, does anyone have any tips for speeding this process along?).
5:45 AM: COFFEE. Depending on whether or not I’m drinking the good stuff or not (currently not), I drink my coffee black. If it’s not the good stuff, I load it with half & half and sugar. Finally get to pee.
5:50 – 6:20 AM: This is the best part of my morning routine. If I’ve showered the night before and my hair doesn’t look insane… I get back into bed. Yep, you read that right. The dogs and I prop up the pillows and waste a good 30 minutes checking social media and planning that day’s outfit. This is the “you time” I was talking about earlier. I read the news, check my notifications, schedule a few social media posts depending on how I’m feeling, and get on Pinterest for outfit inspiration (post to come on that later). Most importantly, I drink my coffee. Sometimes, I try to eat breakfast but I usually save that for when I get to work.
6:20 – 7:00AM: Now is the time I actually start getting ready for work. I do my make-up, hair, brush my teeth, etc. and get dressed. If I have time, I’ll take the dogs out one more time before they go in their kennels for the day.
7:00 AM: I’m (hopefully) dressed, presentable, and out the door on my way to work. It takes anywhere between 20-30 minutes for the drive. I usually try and make a cup of coffee to take with me but this depends on whether or not I’ve spent too much time picking out clothes or not.
7:30 AM: Arrive to work. Drop stuff at desk and immediately go about making breakfast. This is also the time of the morning where I start to track my water intake. I try not to drink any coffee after I get to work (though sometimes this is unavoidable).
As you can see, my morning routine is nothing special. Some people choose to sleep in rather than blocking out a time for basically doing nothing. But those 30 minutes where I can spend looking at social media, reading the news, etc. gets me focused for the day and most importantly, allows me to focus ones I get to work. Checking the news also let’s me shut down some of the ridiculous comments my coworkers tend to make, especially when it comes to political figures. So I like to be prepared.
I wanna know: What does your morning routine look like? Do you have an allotted amount of “you time” in the mornings? So hit up that comment section.
